Our days are often misty and the close shore pines stand out vibrantly against the soft background- sometimes the hills seem to be suspended in the air. Muskeg ponds full of rainwater reflect the bright cloudy sky. Shore pines (Pinus contorta) are sun lovers and in the sunny muskegs of Southeast Alaska they naturally twist into bonsai-like forms. If you have walked the Raven Trail in Petersburg, you might recognize this view, perhaps even this tree.
